Located in the heart of an asteroid field is a mile-long rock covered by a thick forest of dark blue dusk-trees. The dusk-trees cast most of the asteroid's surface in perpetual twilight, the perfect haunt for the primary inhabitants, a tribe of goblins. They are the servants of Longeye 'Taul, a beholder salvager of ships.

Longeye 'Taul has made a business of hunting down old wrecks and tearing them apart, down to their keel, and selling the scrap for salvage. His goblins have become quite effective at it. As Longeye will deal with almost anyone, many less than savory characters of wildspace visit his salvage yard to buy equipment and material to repair their own ships, especially if they are on the run. More often, Longeye simply sells the reclaimed lumber, nails, and other materials to passing merchants, who in turn sell the supplies to communities that are short on such things. Likewise, merchants will sell him ships at the end of their usefulness, to be broken down for scrap. Sometimes pirates will sell Longeye old ships they want to 'disappear'.

The Salvage Yard

Map of Salvage Yard

The asteroid that the salvage yard is located on is a relatively flat asteroid about a mile long with the overall shape of an oval. At the center it is about 1000' thick, and narrows a bit towards the edges, though the island is bounded by 300' high cliffs all around. A forest of dusk-trees, a tree native to asteroids with a narrow trunk and a wide canopy 30' or more overhead, covers most of the asteroid. Along the gravity plane are a pair of large caves, each a circular cavity about 100' in diameter and over 1000' deep. Smaller caves connect these two large caves to the goblin living quarters and to the asteroid surface.

  1. Main Wrecking Cave: The larger and deeper of the two caverns, the wrecking cave is where the goblins haul ships in to be torn apart. The cave is equipped with all manner of cranes, wenches, and pulley-systems to aid in tearing a ship down to its base components. Working in this cave, the goblins can dismantle 1 ton of ship per hour of work. Thus, a dragonfly could be dismantled in a single 10-hour shift, while a hammership would take 60 hours. The goblins work a 10-hour shift, one shift per day, more if there is more work. Unless there is a ship to be dismantled, the cave is usually disserted.

  2. Lumber Storage: Boards, masts, and other salvageable lumber is brought here for storage until it is sold off. The room is currently half full.

  3. Nail Storage: This narrow room is build much like a grain silo, over 80' but only 20' in diameter. The goblins toss reclaimed nails here in barrels. There is only two barrels in this room, as a merchant recently stopped by to purchase as many barrels as he could afford.

  4. Other metal Storage: All other metal salvaged from a ship, barring precious metals, are placed in crates in this room. The goblins have accumulated a great deal of tarnished brass fixtures that few passing merchants are willing to buy. The room is about three quarters full, and space is rapidly running out.

  5. Goblin Commons: Each of these five rooms is a common sleeping/dining/entertaining area for an individual clan of goblins. The goblins have no sense of privacy and pretty much do their daily business wherever they feel like it. The goblins under Longeye's employ are a bit more civilized than normal and keep these rooms fairly clean. Each goblin has a straw mat for a bed and usually a bag of personal goods. The largest room has mats for about 80 goblins while the other rooms have mats for about 60 goblins each.

  6. Armory: All weapons other than makeshift clubs are kept in this chamber under lock and key. Longeye doesn't let his goblins run around with weapons that could be used to harm him. However, in the event of an attack, he will quickly arm his goblins for battle.

Most of the weapons in the armory were salvaged, and thus in poor repair. There are 75 short swords, 143 daggers, 38 maces, 291 light crossbows, over 2,000 crossbow bolts, and 300 assorted weapons.

  7. Spare Siege Weapons: Occasionally, Longeye salvages a ship with a functioning siege weapon left. These weapons are a fairly popular with passing merchants, so Longeye rarely has more than a couple on hand at any given time. Currently, he has two light catapults and a heavy ballista, taken from three different wrecks.

  8. Furnace: Sometimes, wood recovered from a ship has no resale value, due to damage or rot. These pieces are fated to burn in this furnace, which heats Longeye's private suite as well as other parts of the base. The fires are lit only when the salvage yard strays in the shadow of a particularly large asteroid for extended periods, chilling the place to uncomfortable levels. During such times, the fires are attended by a dozen goblin workers. Otherwise, the place is deserted.

  9. Storage: Wood destined for the furnace is stored here. There is enough wood for several days burning.

  10. Pantry: These three rooms are packed with foodstuffs. Sacks of flour and dried meat, barrels hard tack, and dried fruit all are stored in these rooms. There is enough food to keep the yard's inhabitants fed for two months. Keeping rats away are a constant problem, though they welcome the extra source of meat.

  11. Kitchen: Meals are prepared here. The kitchen is surprisingly well stocked with cooking utensils, as Longeye enjoys a good meal. The goblin cooks are quite skilled with the unusual dishes that Longeye favors.

  12. Longeye's Workshop: The beholder salvager does have his hobbies, and this room is dedicated to that hobby. Longeye enjoys sculpting, using his eye of disintegration to carve statues from stone. He has become an expert at angles and quite a skilled artist. His favorite piece includes a contemplating beholder, a beholder hive mother (beautiful by beholder standards), and a beholder with the body of a human.

  13. Longeye's Quarters: For all his lording over his goblin servants, Longeye's personal quarters are quite spartan. He has a tub of scented water he carved from solid stone, a bed of pillows, and a few pieces of art.

  14. Longeye's Treasure: This hidden chamber has four chests, each with about 3,000 gp worth of copper, silver, electrum, and gold coins. Buried at the bottom of one of the chests is a +2 longsword, +4 mageslayer.

Goblins: There are just over 300 goblins, including women and children, at the salvage yard. They are unremarkable in abilities and talents. They wear simple sailor clothing and armed with clubs. In times of danger, the goblins will arm themselves with daggers, spears, and short swords. Other than small wooden shields, they have no armor to speak of.

Longeye 'Taul: This beholder is a typical specimen of his race. All of his eyes are still functional, and he has 45 hit points. He is somewhat unusual in that he has a tan-brown hide that appears flabby rather than hard armor. He is actually a jovial fellow with an affiliation for those that don't fit in with society, much like himself. He has a Ring of Human Influence on one of his eyestalks.

The Wrecker: This is Longeye's personal ship that he uses for wrecking other ships. It is a scorpionship that has been stripped of most of its armor and weaponry to make room for cargo and extra crewmen. Because of Longeye's modifications, the Wrecker has an armor rating of 7, 30 hull points, and a single medium ballista. The crew consists of Longeye himself and twenty-five goblins. The ship once shined with newly forged iron, but now has turned crimson-red from rust and neglect.

[ Scorpion Ship Deckplans ]

  1. Lookout: The tail of the scorpionship has been converted into a lookout.

  2. Ratlines: A half-dozen rope lines connect the lookout to the main deck.

  3. Ballista: This is the only weapon the Wrecker has. A rack of twenty spears, ammunition for the ballista, sits behind the weapon.

  4. Helm: The Wrecker is equipped with a beholder orbi, a creature Longeye took with him when he fled the beholder nations. It floats quietly in the middle of the room, directing the ship when it is needed. It is attended at all times by four goblins, who clean, massage, and otherwise pamper the small creature. The room has many pillows on the floor. The walls are covered with shelves that have the many special oils and ointments needed for the care of an orbi.

  5. Crew Room: Situated near the center of the ship, this room sees a good deal of activity. The doors to the room are easily locked, but are otherwise not particularly strong.

  6. Galley/Quarters: About a dozen straw mats and piles of rags are on the floor in this room. Along each wall are crude bunk beds, where the stronger goblins sleep. Weaker goblins are relegated to sleeping on the floor.

  7. Longeye's Quarters: This room has a circular door in the middle of it. The room has pillows, small mementos Longeye considers valuable, and a small, hidden treasure chest with about 900 gp that Longeye keeps on hand for emergencies.

  8. Claw Machinery: The claws of the Wrecker are not well cared for. Thus, they have a habit of jamming (15% any time a claw is used). Once jammed, it takes a team of four goblins about two minutes to get it unjammed.

  9. Main Cargo: Any valuable cargo salvaged from a derelict ship is stored in this room. Usually, this means it is jammed with useless junk and maybe one or two valuable objects.

  10. Secondary Cargo: The ship's food is kept in these two smaller cargo rooms. The port side cargo room has a small stove and serves as the ship's kitchen. Goblins sometimes sneak down here for a snack.

  11. Cargo Doors: A pair of rusty doors hangs above the cargo hold. The doors take a minute to open or close with two goblins working each door.
