Alright then, here's one... Note that I created Po specifically for use in
my campaign as a deckhand but he's become the first mate since then and has
a lot more detail now. If the farmatting of the character information looks
screwy, go check out the web page noted at the bottom for the html sheet
that's all prettified.

Character History

Po grew up like most Thoric in Clusterspace, farming his father's piece of
land until he was about 16 when his father took him to the market, feeling
he was old enough to handle himself and help with the season's sale. Po,
knowing he'd be going, looked forward to the trip. When he got there it was
all that he had dreamed and more. Even though he knew what to expect,
nothing could brace him for the majesty of the various Thoric vessels that
were landed, hovering and even some that were in flight. Certainly, he
noticed the women, but he felt that he'd found a new calling.

He went amicably back with his father and other brothers that had come
along (he himself was the third son) but upon arriving home, his mind was
filled with the thoughts of the ships he'd seen. A week later, he spoke
with his father about them and his father was not only pleased to see his
son showing an interest, but agreed to help him on his way for Po's father
had made his fortune as a mate aboard a Thoric longship before settling
down.

And so, each day when chores were all done, Po worked with his father and
brothers practicing his skills--knots, the flail (the only weapon
available, it was actually a thresher but worked the same until he could
purchase his own), and with his father's help, he learned the stars.
Eventurally, on his 18th birthday, his father recommended that, even though
he loved his son, he did not wish to stand in his way and blessed his son
with leave to go whenever he wanted. Po gathered his things and some small
amount of money and left a week later having said good byes and promising
to send some money home when he could.

Po arrived in the port town and found an inexpensive Inn. He lodged there
and began to seek work in the various pubs. It seemed that no one would
take a farmer's son who knew 'a little' about spacejamming and whose head
was full of dreams. With Po's pocket money getting low and fearing the
streets or, worse, returning home a failure, he decided to watch the
jammer's in the pub. He noticed how they walked and talked and what they
wore. He grew a beard to enhance the look of his age. Eventually, after 3
days he felt he had it down. He used the last of his money to buy a pair of
sailcloth pants and a loose shirt. He sold all of his belongings except the
few things he held dear such as his flail and other necessities. He even
sold his stout work boots to purchase a pair of sailing shoes. Grimed up
and feeling the part, he practiced his speech for a short time and checked
out of his Inn.

With all of his belongings wrapped in a ball in his cloak and under his
arm, he went to a pub he'd never been and began asking for work. This time
he changed his speech to that of some old spacesalt he'd spoken with when
he first got to town. As luck would have it, the man he approached did have
need of a hand but in less than 30 seconds, he told Po that he had no need
of a newbie jammer. Po pleaded with the man, reverting to his normal
dialect. The cap'n finally tired of the boy and relented with the
stipulation of half pay and he'd be the lowest man on the totem pole.

They set off two days later on a trader bound for a not-too-distant rock to
transport lumber and messages. Po served well enough and learned much. He
ended up serving for a year with the captain, fighting in only a couple
battles, landing on only 3 rocks to circle back to where he started on his
home planet. His tour with the ship over, he felt he'd learned a lot but
wanted to see more. With his experience, he signed on with a new crew,
again using his old salt dialect routine and actually managing to trick
everyone he met on his new crew. He worked hard and eventually made
Gunner's Mate. He learned every position he could on all the boats he
worked and even fired the cats and ballistae in some battles.

Life progressed for him in much the same way for 3 years. Now 4 years older
he landed back on his home world and visited his family. He told many
stories but never let on at all about how his ruse of speech had managed to
garner him extra pay through perceived experience. His father was proud and
gave to Po the name of a family friend, Trab, who would be able to give him
a much better position.

--Insert your campaign link here--
Trab turned out to be the harbormaster. Po, using local speech, spoke with
Trab and found that Lorfin's Charm, a Thoric trader was leaving soon and
needed a new hand. Po found the captain (Lorfin) and signed on, again using
his salt dialect to garner a slightly better wage. Po left again and this
time when he found battle, it nearly destroyed him and his crew. (see
Cluster Calamity web page at http://www.greyrose.net/cluster for full
campaign information).
