My first attempt at a logo for Spelljammer, in 1995. I didn't have access to a scanner, so I colorized one of the black-n-white Man-O-Wars that was floating around on the net at the time.
A standard cut-n-paste job, made in late November of 1995. I used a new color scanner from work to grab the Man-O-War picture. The background is an anonymous image I found on some FTP site.
I wanted the logo to be borderless, so, in July of 1996, I put together this version from a NASA space shot that I mangled and a Photoshop lensflare.
To eat up the empty space in the picture, I added a small nebula in May of 1997. Those with a sharp eye may recognize the nebula as the one from the Spelljammer: Pirates of Realsmpace computer game intro. The lensflare was added to hide this fact.
This version was made from the winning entry for WotC's Netlogo Contest. This was my first attempt at 3d modelling, back in September of 1997. The planet and moon are my own creations, the ship is a model I found.
After picking up 3d modelling again, I created a basic elven flitter in September of 1999. This logo introduced the second moon around the planet, putting the "moons" into Beyond the Moons.
Only a few months later, in November of 1999, I touched up the textures on the model. I also found some include files for generating nebulas, lensflares, and stars. The whole picture is now rendered—no more cut-n-paste—except for the text.
