While going through "Under A Dark Fist", during the huge space battle where every race and their brother was in attendance, my DM decided that the neogi fleet did not get caught in the beholder crossfire, nor did they join the vodoni forces. Instead they simply withdrew in the hope that all the races fighting would kill each other off.
The good guys won the battle against the vodoni, finishing the module, but this left all the races fleets severely lacking in ship strength. My character—Dazdak Mel'tath f/m 11/12 Captain I.E.N. man-o-war Starblazer, and one time slave of the neogi—decided he was going to repay the neogi for their transgressions. The I.E.N. upon learning of his intentions, and fearing the loss of more ships, ordered him to return to base. Dazdak refused, but the mutiny that he expected to follow did not happen. All crew members agreed with him, and to his surprise three other man-o-war joined up (and who said charisma was a useless stat!). The Starblazer and the the other ships were in bad need of repair. Dazdak's first officer was from a backwater planet and said we could be resupplied there so thats where the small group went. During the journey, Dazdak made notes about vodoni ship design and advantages that they gave—and began plans for a ship of both elven and vodoni design (i.e. using elven materials and vodoni shape).
The planet proved to be a good place for a base of operations because of its distance from the trading routes, and so started the Elven Confederate Navy. The first ship design was the STING RAY followed by the SKATE and finally came the MANTA RAY.
