The Stalwart is a rather uninspiring caravel, like many that journey the space lanes. She and her crew were PCs in my spelljammer campaign.
A clumsy and capricious caravel, the Stalwart was once a sea-going ship in a groundling navy. Hijacked by adventurers and equipped with a minor spelljamming helm, she was catapulted into wildspace with barnacles still clinging to her bows.
Since then she has led a fast-paced life, battling pirates and avoiding starbeasts. The hard-up adventurers did little to improve her, instead saving their gold to buy a custom-built spelljammer. The only modification was to add a swivel-mounted arquebus to the crow's nest, augmenting the light catapult and ballista already installed from the days she sailed the high seas.
After half a year in wildspace, the Stalwart was abandoned by its adventuring masters. They handed it over to Mindaeus Thine, who had been it's original captain on his home planet. Thine gathered together a crew, and put his beloved vessel to work. The Stalwart carries various trade goods, occasionally smuggles some low risk commodities, and will ferry anybody willing to sleep with only a pile of rope for a pillow.
Captain Thine misses the deep blue sea, and often lands the Stalwart for a spot of sailing if in range of a water world.
MINDAEUS THINE (NEUTRAL GOOD/HUMAN MALE/FIGHTER 9)
The original captain of the Stalwart when it was part of a groundling navy, Mindaeus Thine and his crew were overpowered by a group of crazy adventurers. His love for his ship made him stay aboard, even when his captors revealed they intended to take his caravel into space.
Over time, Mindaeus became used to spelljamming instead of sailing, and became friends with the adventurers who had commandeered the Stalwart. He retained his title of captain, and when the adventurers bought a new vessel they left Stalwart in his care.
Captain Thine is a brave and generous individual, loved and respected by his followers. He never used armour when at sea, fearing it would drag him under it he went overboard. This habit has continued through his wildspace career, regardless that the risk has passed. His amazing agility (dexterity 18) is more than enough to protect him. He fights with a cutlass+1 that he took from a defeated pirate.
LISTRA (NEUTRAL GOOD/HUMAN FEMALE/MAGE 7)
The Stalwart's helmswoman, Listra is the only crew member aside from Mindaeus Thine to have also journeyed with the adventurers who commanded the ship in her early wildspace career. They rescued her from a band of space pirates that forced her to power their pirate ship. Listra disliked adventuring but felt indebted, and when the adventurers bought their new ship she offered to be the helmsman Mindaeus needed.
Listra is fascinated in astronomy, and spends on arrival in a new crystal sphere will spend much time studying its layout with her miniature bronze telescope. This possession is incredibly expensive, and Listra dreads it being stolen. Her love of the stars is reflected in her spell repertoire, and she knows many incantations specifically related to spelljamming.
Listra enjoys piloting the Stalwart, but finds controlling its bulk very wearing. She approaches her apprentice Sparrow will become accomplished enough to take more responsibility piloting the ship.
SPARROW (CHAOTIC GOOD/HALF-ELF FEMALE/MAGE 3)
Listra's apprentice, Sparrow is a young half-elf. She is a dreamer, and has always wanted to learn the ways of magic, take control of a spelljamming helm and fly through the stars. Although not the most dedicated student, Sparrow's quick reactions and courage have made Listra very proud.
BASTRO (LAWFUL NEUTRAL/GIFF MALE/THIEF 5)
An unusual giff, Bastro is smaller and thinner than most of his kind. This makes him more nimble, not no less strong, his limbs are like corded iron and he enjoys fighting hand to hand without a weapon. However, his commonest reaction to battle is climb easily up to the crow's nest with several sacks of smoke powder. From here mans the arquebus with deadly efficiency.
KULAMERE O'WARRO (CHAOTIC NEUTRAL/HUMAN MALE/FIGHTER 5)
Dense but immensely powerful, Kulamere is the Stalwart's brawn. He is really stupid (intelligence 3), and must be painstakingly shown which rope to pull or which bad guy to bash. He is a frightening warrior, attacking with a pair of huge knives. Kulamere appears to member of some kind of tribe, but is unsure of his own origins - in fact he can barely remember last week.
ISOLDA IRRAEIOS (LAWFUL GOOD/HUMAN FEMALE/FIGHTER 2)
An avid worshipper of Ptah, Isolda drives her crewmates barmy with her constant preaching. However, her speciality with the khopesh sword is handy in a pirate raid, so they keep their complaints to themselves.
Four 1st level Fighters (Average Crew).
