Lord Monitor looked up from his work. An attendant silently handed him another report, nodded, then left. The Magi looked over the report with grim determination. He was receiving information about what was happening in Omnispace, and although he knew the final outcome, he still didn't like the news he was receiving.
Daran Hearth sat across from the magi, resting on a comfortable couch. Although he was awake, Daran pretended to be asleep. He knew Monitor was upset over the events happening in Omnispace, and he could do nothing about it. Better to let the old man come to me when he's ready, Hearth thought.
Monitor took one final look over the notes, made a few markings on the map, then dropped the pen. He leaned forward, putting his head down on the table. The heavy sigh Monitor let out was a clue that he was ready to talk, so Hearth 'woke up' slowly, yawning melodramatically.
"Good Morning," Monitor said, his face still against the table.
"That bad, hun?" Hearth said. He stood slowly, old Elven bones creaking slightly. Monitor looked up and motioned for Hearth to join him. The ranger walked around the table to look over the maps Monitor worked on.
On the table was a map of Omnispace, drawn over in red and black inks. Monitor took a stylus and pointed as he spoke.
"The way it looks now," Monitor began, "is that Tymar is going to spin out of control right into Lora, and the ensuing explosion will char Omni and Duranus, while completely obliterating Maclear. The force of the explosion will disperse Gobul, but it's already been evacuated."
"Karnak will probably survive the brunt of the blast, but there's a good chance that the explosion will open a huge planar gate. If this is the case, it will start in the very center of the sphere, where Lora is, and proceed exponentially outward, consuming everything it touches. By my calculations, within a week of the explosion, the planar gate will reach the spherewall."
"What will happen then?" Hearth asked, looking over Monitor's shoulder at the map.
"I have no idea," the magi replied. "We don't know what sphere walls are compromised of. We do know that planar gates can't exist outside of Wildspace. I can't begin to guess what's going to happen."
Hearth turned around and looked out the window, into the Phlogiston. The rainbow ocean swirled slowly outside. Below, on the main grounds, several timdier, a subspecies of common deer that have powers resembling unicorn, save they don't have antlers, frolic in the new woods that are their home.
"Why did it have to end," Hearth commented. "Were we really that bad of a people to make this happen? What god out there in those damnable planes decided we have to lose our home?"
"I have no idea, old friend," Monitor replied. "I have no idea."
The two men didn't speak after that, lost in their own thoughts.
