Chapter XL

The wave of Elemental Fire and Air spread throughout the Omnispace system, consuming everything it touched. Omni fell one day after the wave formed. The heat charred the entire planet: Rising temperatures quickly killed both mortals and hordlings before the flames could consume the planet.

Omni exploded into hundreds of fragments as the energy wave struck the planet. In turn, each fragment was consumed in elemental fire. A last few spelljamming ships left Omni as the planet exploded, but they could not outrun the energy wave. Ship after ship was engulfed in flames, its very air envelope evaporated by the intense heat.

Maclear's death scene was, in a macabre sense, the most spectacular of them all. As the wave of elemental fire approached the planet, all its citizens, surface-dwelling and aquatic, were boiled alive by the rising temperatures. Once the wave approached Maclear, the water world simply evaporated, with not even the steam surviving the experience.

Duranus, all but overrun by hordling invaders, was simply engulfed in flame. None could escape the planet, with all the ships overrun by hordlings. The small planet, as the wave approached, simply burnt itself out of existence.

Gobul, Omnispace's airworld, was scattered by the cleansing elemental fire. Whatever inhabitants remained were blown away with the stellar winds. Karnak, the last planet in Omnispace, was another story however. The inhabitants stood their ground against the invaders. Some felt that since it was a live world, sentient of itself, it would survive. As the wave of elemental fire approached, it knocked Karnak out of its orbit.

The planet launched away from the fire, whether it was trying to escape or was being pushed by the flames, was never made clear. Staying just ahead of the wave, it sped through wildspace out of control. Karnak finally crashed into the spherewall, shattering the planet into millions of shards of land and sea.

Nothing escaped the purifying fires of the wave. The Waterfall Nebula simply was swallowed by the flames. Asteroids by the thousands near the Tarangheti Sargasso were consumed. A herd of delphnid were killed trying to outrun the disaster.

Finally, after a week of travel, the wave of elemental fire reached the spherewall. Just before the two met, the wave seemed to slow, almost stop itself. Sages who would later read on what occured next could not agree on why the wave stopped. Some thought the wave sentient, and pondered what it had done. Others simply believed that the spherewall itself stopped the fires, if only for a second.

The fiery wave finally leapt forward, touching the spherewall. When they met, all within Omnispace was consumed. Several ships were outside the sphere at the time, and noticed the black shell turn white, then slowly fade from existence. The shell protected the phlogiston from the deadly fire. Omnispace died not with a roar, but rather with a whimper and a sigh.

Te'Ess-Arr watched the sphere disappear from the bridge of his diamondship, an evil smile on his lips. He was content. As Omnispace faded from sight, one of the arcane underlings looked up from his control board.

"M'Lord," he said, "ships approaching this sector."

"Activate Invisibility Shields, and take us away from here. Set course for Solarispace."

A slight hum could be heard in the background as the workstations of the minor Arcane began to glow. Outside, the massive diamond ship faded from sight, turning invisible. Just before it completely disappeared, it turned on its axis and began to move away from where Omnispace stood, through the Phlogiston, off to its next victim.
