Home of the Tauran Empire
by Paul WestermeyerI'm in the process of detailing Taurusspace, a sphere I first mentioned in my Phlogiston Map. Basically I wanted a way for the Minotaurs of Kyrnn (or minotaurs like those of Krynn) to survive in my SJ campaign without getting involved with any of that Dragonlance Fifth Age stuff. Then, it occurred to me that the historical god Mithras would make a great deity for those oppossing minotaurs and so Taurusspace was born. So enjoy and please send me any comments!
Tauruspace is a fairly young sphere, which still makes it several millennium old. Lying just beyond Krynnspace on the Krynnflow (if one were travelling from Bralspace) it has missed much of the turmoil of the two Unhuman Wars. It is an unremarkable sphere in many ways, average size, a smaller then average number of astronomical bodies but those are all fairly standard. The crystal shell itself is easily passed by portal creating spells, and there are a fair number of naturally occurring portals. Some are regular, these are constantly patrolled by the Tauran navy.
The sphere has two different types of stars. The most imposing are those which make up the spheres two constellations, the Bull and the Sword. These stars are very bright, sometimes even visible in the light of day on the planets below. Surprisingly, they are not embedded within the crystal shell, but rather seem to float motionless in space several million miles in. Most other objects in the sphere orbit the primary but these two stay firmly in place facing each other across the sphere. The nature of these stars is unknown, as each is surrounded by an anti-magical sargossa which has prevented all exploration to date.
The second, much more common type of star is far dimmer, but also unusual. The "billion" stars the sphere inhabitants look up to are actually fist sized crystals which glow as if under a continual light spell. These float within the sphere between the crystal shell and Girru's orbit. Strangely none float within Girru's orbit. These stars can be easily approached by a spelljamming craft, but if touched by a living being they teleport instantly to a random location elsewhere outside Girru's orbit. Dispel Magic spells have had no effect on this teleporting or the spheres glow, which even works within an antimagic shell!
The Bull Constellation — The Sword Constellation
A Size E spherical firebody. This system's primary is a fairly standard sun named, appropriately, after the sphere's sun god Utu.
Geb is a Size E spherical Earthbody. A standard world similar in many ways to Toril or Krynn Geb is named after the earth god. It is the home of the Tauran Empire and the most inhabited world in the sphere. It has one satellite, Nanna-sin, a small, rocky, waterless sphere which houses an Imperial Tauran Navy base, an Imperial Army base, and a spelljamming Trader's port.
This size G spherical waterworld is dotted with thousands of small, mountainous islands (the peaks of mountains jutting from its deep seas). These islands are inhabited by the planets only indigenous sentient species, avariel or winged elves. These elves live in scattered tribes, all of which owe allegiance to a single queen. Ahto is a happy, peaceful world. Only "natural" animals are found here (except for the Avariel). The Imperial Elven Navy maintains contact with the Queen of the Avariel, through both magical and mundane means. Some limited trade is also carried on between the Avariel and spelljamming elves. 2 centuries ago the Tauran Empire suffered its first major defeat when it attempted to conquer this vast world. The conflict was finally concluded with the signing of the Ahto Accords. the Imperial Elven Navy acknowledged the sovereignty of the Tauran Empire over the rest of the sphere, and the Tauran Empire accepted that Ahto was outside its domain and sovereign in its own right. The outbreak of the Second Unhuman War has caused many to call for a revocation of the Ahto Accords, but the Emperor has not acted on this yet.
This size D spherical earthworld is very seismically active. Steam, hotsprings, mud, lava and earthquakes are all common. The planet is inhabited by several species of heat loving creatures, but no one has catalogued them yet. Named after the spheres god of Fire, this world hoses several Tauran mining colonies in its more hospitable regions.
Nearly four hundred years ago in the the crystal sphere known as Krynnspace the gods hurled a giant asteroid at the planet Krynn in retaliation for the arrogance of that planet's most powerful group, the Istaran Empire. This event, called the Cataclysm, has been more fully detailed in the chronicles and histories of that sphere, but one unnoticed event at the time had a profound impact on the history of the Tauruspace and its most habitable planet, Geb.
A band of minotaurs (then a minor race on Krynn), field slaves of the Istaran Empire, used the chaos of this event to escape their former masters, just as many others did. Journeying overland they slowly increased their numbers until over two hundred minotaurs were marching behind their leader, Dargas Dar-Mithka. Dargas was an old but strong bull minotaur, descended in a direct line from the legendary Mithas. Through hunger and storms he led his band as the planet reeled from the effects of the god's anger. One night he was met by a tall, blue giant who somehow came alone into his tent without disturbing the guards. Introducing himself as an "Arcane", he outline an astounding deal to the minotaur. He would provide five flying ships and the knowledge of how to sail them, which Dargas and his band would be able to use to escape the horrors of the world of Krynn. Then, the arcane added, he would lead Dargas' band to a new world, one where minotaurs were one of the dominant races. In return all the Arcane wanted freedom from all taxes and trade restrictions in any nation founded by Dargas and his group or their descendants. Of course, this freedom was to be guaranteed for eternity and would apply to all arcane.
It took some proof and convincing but Dargas eventually agreed. The Arcane was true to his word, Dargas band was given 5 ships, their workings were explained and the arcane himself navigated their route from Krynnspace to Tauruspace. He led the band, as promised to the world of Geb. Landing on the Terthian continent near the mouth of the planet's largest river he left them to fend for themselves.
Dargas and his band soon found that the Arcane had spoken the truth, Geb held only two sentient species: humans and minotaurs. The humans were at an early stage of civilization. Many still lived in small tribal bands, but along the worlds great river basins small city states had begun to emerge. These were dominated by the priesthood's of the four original deities found in this sphere; Geb, Utu, Ahto, and Girru. The minotaurs were savages, different in many ways from the Krynnish minotaurs. The most striking physical difference between the two was the cloven hooves of the Geban minotaurs (the Krynnish minotaurs have std humanoid feet). despite this difference the two different races soon discovered they could breed. Dargas began collecting every native minotaur he could get his hands on, by the time he died he had firmly established the future capital city of Dargia and laid the foundations for the empire to come.
Over the next five centuries the Tauran empire steadily expanded on the planet, the various human city states were no match for the combination of minotaur soldiers and a spelljamming navy. Today all the urban centres of both the northern continents are under the control of the Empire. The Southern continent is much more wild, here imperial outposts must vie with human tribesmen. The humans of the northern continents are either subjects (read "slaves") of the Empire or outlaws. It is impossible, of course, for the Tauran Empire to control every square inch of the northern continents but those whose oppose them, or simply claim independence are restricted to the wilderness and desolate regions.
Within Tauruspace there is only one government which can be spoken of - The Tauran Empire. In reality there is no other openly organised society within the sphere, and the Tauran Empire claims the entire sphere as its domain.
The Empire is ruled by an Emperor, who must be a minotaur (of course) of senatorial rank. The position is far from secure, any minotaur of Senatorial rank can, if he follows the proper protocols, challenge the emperor to a duel in the arena. This rarely occurs, protocol demands that the challenger have earned a certain number of honours as a military commander, and hold a series of political offices proving his worthiness mentally and spiritually before having a chance to prove it physically in battle against the current emperor. While the Senate controls the awarding of military honours, the Emperor controls the appointments which provide the opportunities to win these honours. Unless the Emperor is inept, then, he can easily control who will be in a position to legally challenge him. It has become a tradition for Emperors to groom their successor (usually their son or other male relative) for years, when they are on their deathbed they appoint their successor to the last position needed to properly challenge for the throne. Their successor then gives the old Emperor an honourable death in the Arena while earning the Imperial crown. In this way powerful family dynasties have emerged, though if the Emperor dies early chaos can erupt as the Senate "runs" things until a new Emperor can fight his bloody path through Senatorial politics and the arena.
The Senate is composed of male minotaurs descended from the original 200 or so colonists who followed Dargas dar Mithak, provided, of course, they meet the requisite property ownership and military service obligations. The Senate works in many ways like the Senate of Rome, in our world.
The Tauran Empire is divided into classes. At the top of the rung is the Senatorial class. Note that not all members of the Senatorial class are Senators, though all Senators are members of the Senatorial class. It is very difficult to enter this group, except through heredity. the Emperor has the power to add one to it, yet this has only been used twice in the history of the Empire. There are both Geban and krynnish minotaurs in this group.
The second rung in the class system is held by those minotaurs not descended from the original Krynnish colonists. By far the larger group, it is composed entirely of Geban minotaurs. The fortunes of this class very widely, some are on the verge of starvation, while others are rich merchants with more wealth then many Senators. Most are the everyday minotaurs seen on the Empires streets, craftsmen and soldiers.
The third rung is that of the Freemen, non-enslaved humans. This group is the larger of the human groups, and includes the human craftsmen and traders who make their way through the Empire. The one benefit they enjoy within the Empire is the freedom from slavery. It is important to remember that human and minotaur populations are nearly equal on Geb.
The final wretched group are the slaves, often mining or agricultural slaves who live short lives whose monotony is only broken by routine "breeding" breaks. By Tauran law a slave's children are slaves as well, the large number of Freemen in the Empire and the lack of easily available sources of slaves within the sphere encourage breeding.
The Tauran Empires might rests on two distinct institutions, the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy. Both are essential to the well being and expansion of the Empire. Only minotaurs are allowed with either service, though human auxiliaries are sometimes employed.
The Imperial army is organised into Legions, Each legion is identified by number (the 1st legion is the Imperial Guard) and makes up a compact, self sufficient fighting force. Each legion is led by a Legate and is made up of 10 centuries and each century consists of around 50 minotaurs. Centuries are commanded by Centurians. The 500 or so minotaurs of this powerful force are armoured in partial chain and carry shortswords and javelins (because they are relatively cheap weapons to produce). Attached to the headquarters of the legion would be military engineers, priests, and other support personal. A Tauran legion always establishes a fortified camp at night, and has ten heavy ballistae assigned for "aerial" defence and artillery support. Of course, today the legions have only scattered tribesmen and guerillas to fight on the planet Geb. The army is pushing hard for a full scale invasion of a large planet in some neighbouring sphere, as they have had few opportunities for "glory" lately.
There are actually two Imperial Navies, though no one within the Navy's high command would admit it. The larger, less glamorous navy is the terrestrial one of Geb. It is heavily involved in patrolling that world's oceans for pirates, who seem to be on the rise. The officers within this branch realise better then anyone the degree to which the Tauran Empire does not control its home world of Geb. they struggle every day with limited funds to find pirates in oceans which are far vaster then might appear from the heavens.
The smaller, more politically powerful faction is that of the spelljamming navy. The cream of the crop, both officers and enlisted are recruited for this branch. Seeing themselves as the followers of Dargas himself many officers in this group see Geb as simply the first conquest of the Tauran Empire. despite this they have more first hand knowledge of other spheres then the army and oppose any immediate extraspherical war. They know the Tauran Empire is not yet ready to provide the logistical support such a venture would require. they would prefer the Empire conquer Ahto (where the navy would naturally gain the most honour) but cannot figure out how this can be accomplished without breaking the Ahto Accords.
The Imperial army contains 30 Legions and 50 Cohorts. Each legion and Cohort is numbered. The 1st Legion is the Imperial Guard, responsible for provided guards for the palace and other grounds of the capital. The 2nd and 3rd Legions are the Senatorial Guard, the provide security for the Senate building, and body guards for Senators when they leave the capital. The Cohorts are comprised of the human warriors used by the miniatures as skirmishers and auxiliary troops, they are commanded by minotaur officers.
In the field, each legion always has at least one cohort attached to it. In addition, Legates usually request a contingent of priests from the Temple of their choice. These will be priests of Geb, Utu, Girru, or Sargonnas. The legions are usually scattered across the two continents, garrisoned in cities and small towns.
The army is commanded directly by the Emperor, who issues orders to his Field Marshals and Legates as needed. Because of the politics involved, the vast distances their forces cover, and the self-sufficiency of the Legion, individual Legates have a great deal of independence.
The Legion Each legion is comprised of: 1 Legate [the commander] 2-12 Tribunes 10 Centuries 10 heavy Ballistae 50 Pack Mules Each Century is comprised of: 1 Centurion 2 Secundoi (singular Secundus) 48 Legionaries The Cohort Each Cohort is comprised of: 1 Tribune (commander) 1 Centurion (minotaur) 2 Secundoi (human) 100 Psiloi (human)
Field Marshals (Common Characteristic): Field Marshals command the Tauran armies, they will control multiple legions and cohorts, sometimes commanding all the forces on a planet or continent. Because Field Marshal rank is one of the prerequisites for challenging the Emperor to a duel, the Emperor carefully controls who gets this position. There are only a half dozen or so Field Marshals in the Imperial Army.
Legate: Always a minotaur, often of Senatorial Rank. One must have served as a Tribune before being promoted to this rank. Legates command the Legions, many officers end at this rank. A typical Legate is [LN or LE Minotaur M Fighter 8-12]. They wear a bronze breastplate, a purple cloak, and carry a bronze mace as a symbol of there authority. Their armor is usually decorated with small green wreaths representing awards for valor and service.
Tribune: Always a minotaur, this is the position many young Senatorial minotaurs hold to qualify for the Senate. Tribunes are officers, but are usually less experienced then their Centurion underlings since they are appointed by the Legate. A Tribune is required to serve at least 2 years as a legionnaire, so all have at least some military training. Many Senators have their sons assigned to the Senatorial Guard legions so they will not be absent from the capital. A typical tribune is [LN or LE Minotaur male Fighter 2-7]. They wear a bronzeplate and a grey cloak. They are not permitted to carry a mace of authority and have fewer green wreaths then the Legates.
Centurion: The centurion is the backbone of the legion. He commands the century, and has at least ten years as a legionnaire and secundus. He wears the standard partial chain, and carries the standard shortsword and javelins, but he also wears a gold neck torc proclaiming his rank. A typical centurion is [LN or LE Minotaur male Fighter 6-10]. Most centurions follow the Myrmidon kit.
Secundus: The Secundus is the centurion's second, a centurion in training. He wears the standard chain, and carries the standard shortsword and javelins, but he also wears a silver neck torc. The first secundus of the first century of the legion is know as the Optimiate and carries the legion's standard (a silver bull, with the legions number and awards listed on a cloth beneath it). A typical secundus is [LN or LE Minotaur male Fighter 3-7].
This is also the highest rank a human can obtain, though a human secundus is always outranked by a minotaur secundus. A typical human secundus is [LE hm F2-4]
Legionnaire: The primary foot soldier, wearing partial chain and carrying a large body shield, a shortsword, a dagger, and at least three javelins. All legionaries are well trained with their weapons, and with the legion's heavy ballistae, so any unit in legion can crew those weapons. Most are [LN or LE minotaur male Fighter 1-3]
Psiloi: The lowest rank, reserved for humans. Psiloi wear no armor but carry small shields, daggers, and either a sling or a short bow and the appropriate ammunition. Most are [LN or LE hm F1].
There are really two branches of the Imperial Navy, the nautical navy charged with safeguarding the waterways of Geb, and the spelljamming navy which patrols the sphere. The spelljamming fleet is by far the most prestigious, and the two fleets are organized differently enough to be considered as separate entities.
The Navy maintains the fiction that this isn't true, however. Potential minotaur recruits for both train together at the Naval Academy, where seamanship, navigation, and other needed skills are taught. the creme of the academy crop, however, are always sent to the Spelljammer Fleet.
The Imperial Navy is run by a council of seven Grand Admirals, who relay the Emperor's orders to the Fleet Admirals and ship captains.
The nautical fleet is stationed at ports around the oceans of Geb, which it patrols against pirates and rebels. The navy uses triremes for this work, each is crewed by 120 human slaves (rowers), five overseers, and ten marines. A captain and first mate command the vessels. Perhaps 100 such galleys are available at any one time. The triremes have large rams but no other weapons.
Nautical Overseer: These are usually brutal humans hired for their willingness to force their fellows to work. They carry whips and clubs, but wear no uniform. Most are [LE hm Fighter 2].
Nautical Marine: These men are tough fighters, present to keep the slaves in line and to act as the main fighting weapon of the trireme. They wear black leather armor and carry shortswords and composite longbows. They are skilled at sail handling and general seamanship as well. Most are [LN or LE human or minotaur male Fighter 2-5]
Nautical Officer: Frustrated, trying to keep order with few resources, and often bitter, these warriors are as far from the political circles of the Empire as possible. They wear black leather armor, shortswords, and the captain carries a bronze mace as a symbol of their authority. Most are [LN or LE minotaur male fighter 5-10]
The Tauran Spelljammer Fleet consists of five hammerships, ten squidships, and twenty galleons. Unlike the Nautical navy, all crewmembers are minotaurs. The Tauran Empire purchases it's helms from the Arcane, or captures them from opponents. The Hammerships have Major Helms, the other vessels use minor helms.
Each ship carries a crew appropriate to it's needs (usually about half the standard human crew), commanded by a four officers. Captain, First mate, Second Mate, and Third Mate. The helm is handled by three priests, not a direct part of the navy. Each ship's captain is responsible for recruiting these for his own vessel. They are usually priests of levels 2-5 who follow Girru, Ahto, Sargonnas, or Utu. The ship's crew are designated as sailors, though one out of every ten is a Bosun.
The Tauran Imperial Fleet patrols it Tarausspace and the region about the planet regularly. Occasionally long patrols are sent to other spheres to ensure Tauran trade vessels are protected (though in fact, there are very few Tauran merchant vessels).
Captain: Always politically well connected and the creme of the Tauran Navy. They have all the appropriate NWPs, and wear black leather armor. The navy uses small silver or gold medals to indicate awards, and these are usually shown on the chest. They also carry shortswords and the bronze mace which indicates command. Most are [LE or LN minotaur male Fighter 8-12]
Mates: Mates are being groomed for the captaincy, and have many of the same skills. They too wear black leather armor, but are not permitted to carry the mace. They carry a shortsword and wear a gold torc. Most are [LE or LN minotaur male Fighter 4-8]
Bosuns: Bosuns have risen from the ranks, and they wear the standard black leather armor. They carry a cutlass, like the other sailors, but are permitted to wear a silver torc to show their authority. Most are [LE or LN minotaur male Fighter 3-5]
Sailors: The common fighting man aboard ship, skilled with catapult or sail. They wear black leather armor and carry cutlasses. Most are [LE or LN minotaur male Fighter 2-4]
Tauruspace has always been relatively poor magically speaking. The native humans were only just beginning to master some of the more advanced wizardly arts, reaching spells of 5th and 6th level. A few of early experimental magic items (all charged, of course) can still be found in the ruins of cities abandoned after the minotaur conquest. The Geban minotaurs were completely ignorant of the wizardly arts. This relative ignorance has not changed overly much. The minotaurs of the Tauran empire consider wizardly magic a tool for the weak and cowardly, a view caused in part by its use on the part of native humans in their wars against the Tauran Empire. It is a minor crime to use wizardly magic within the Empire and all of the higher level mages within the sphere are visitors from other spheres.
Where wizard magic has traditionally been weak in Tauruspace, priestly devotions have been much better regarded. The early human city-states were ruled by their priesthood's before the conquest, each city-state dedicated to one of the four original deities. The Tauran Empire allows religious freedom within its borders (except to the Mithrans-see below), and many minotaurs have converted to the worship of these deities.
The four original deities of the sphere each have a major planetary body named after them. This pantheon has no paramount leader, the deities instead scheme against each other or working in tandem according to their own interests. Note that within the sphere minotaurs and humans may be priests of any of the deities described (except as noted below).
Geb: Geb corresponds to the Egyptian deity of the same name. He is the god of earth, stone, mountains. A remote, seemingly unchanging deity Geb takes a neutral stance, his priesthood is known within the sphere for following suit. Geb is the closest thing Tauruspace has to a pantheon leader, his neutral stance enables him to often cast the deciding vote in the councils of the gods. Many minotaurs now follow Geb, his image of patient, unyielding strength appeals to the race. Information on Geb and his priesthood can be found in Legends and Lore (Note:Legend and Lore stats should be used for Geb's priesthood, not those from Powers and Pantheons. The priests of Tauruspace are less powerful then those of Realmspace.)
Utu: Utu corresponds to the Sumerian deity of the sun. A chaotic, fickle deity he is quick to anger and quick to forgive. His faith is well represented within the sphere, though he is not as popular among the minotaurs as Geb. Information on Utu and his priesthood can be found in Deities and Demigods or Legends and Lore.
Ahto: Ahto corresponds to the Finnish deity of the same name. He represents the life giving aspects of water and the oceans in Tauruspace, and continually competes with Girru for influence and worshippers. Both minotaur and human sailors are among his worshippers. Information on Ahto and his priesthood can be found in Legends and Lore.
Girru: Girru corresponds to the Babylonian deity of fire. He represents the purifying aspects of fire, though his rages can be quite destructive. Girru competes with Ahto, though both recognise that fire and water are equally necessary for life. Some minotaurs have turned to him, twisting the more common minotaur concept of "Might makes right" to "Might for Right". There are even a few minotaur paladins who follow his tenants.
Sargonnas / Baphomet: Prior to the arrival of the Krynnish minotaurs there was no major deity of evil in Tauruspace. A few cults existed following unsavoury practices, but none of the "deities" worshipped advanced beyond the demipower level. The arrival of the Dargas and his band changed that. One year after their arrival the secret worship of Sargonnas by many of that band brought that deity to Tarusspace. His arrival was heralded by the sudden formation of the first constellation in the sphere, "The Bull". Almost immediately upon entering the sphere Sargonnas sought out the demipower Baphomet who had been vaguely and sporadically worshipped as a patron by the Geban minotaurs. He drove that power from the sphere and absorbed his portfolio, added to his own Sargonnas thus became the deity of power, vengeance, deception, darkness, and minotaur superiority. Sargonnas is the patron deity of the Tauran Empire, but his worship is not a "state" religion. the minotaurs believe that the lesson of the krynnish Cataclysm is that the gods are fickle, best placated but otherwise avoided. Sargonnas' priest work hard to increase their power within the empire, but since that power is based on magic, even if it is clerical magic, they are relatively unsuccessful. One way to tell an educated from an uneducated minotaur in the empire is to listen to which name he gives this patron power; the lower classes call him Baphomet the name his priests used early in the conquests to increase conversions. The educated call him Sargonnas, and focus on his role as the power of deception (a much used commodity in the power games of the Empire's elite).

Mithras: A mere second after the constellation of the "Bull" appeared in Tauruspace another constellation appeared as well, opposite it within the sphere, the "Sword". Though none know from whence or where he came this signified the emergence of a new deity within the sphere. Mithras, the Bull Slayer, appeared to oppose Sargonnas. The power of Light and Truth the worship of Mithras is the only deity specifically illegal within the Empire, it seemed unwise to allow the humans to worship a power titled the "Bull Slayer".
Though many of his followers are guerilla warriors and revolutionaries, Mithras is not against the Empire per se, but rather specifically against Sargonnas. He has no minotaur followers, though he would welcome them. Mithras corresponds to the Roman Mystery Cult deity best described in the Glory of Rome accessory.
His priesthood is very secret, his temples and shrines are underground. Mithras is served not only by his priests but also by a holy order of paladins. These paladins resemble standard AD&D paladins in all respects.

Any deities "foreign" to the sphere are of only minor importance if worshipped at all within Tauruspace.
Tauruspace humans confirm in all respects to the "standard" humans of the AD&D universe. Those who live outside the Tauran Empire should take a savage or barbarian kit - unless they are outlaws. Those within the Empire (and outlaws) are much more civilized, but remember that their social class can never be above middleclass, so noble kits are inappropriate.
There are two races of Tauran Minotaurs. The less common of the two is the Krynnish Minotaur, who follows all the rules for minotaur advancement described in the Dragonlance rules.
The more common by far of the two is the Geban minotaur who should follow the rules presented in the Complete Book of Humanoids. The most obvious difference between the two is the hooves of the Geban minotaurs. The two races can and do interbreed (there is a slight stigma attached for the Krynnite but Dargas himself encouraged this, and took a geban wife himself.) The offspring of such a union breeds true one way or the other, 50% chance of either race. Again, the key is the presence of hooves. This interbreeding is what allowed Gebans to enter the Senatorial class, and it keeps the level of tension between the two classes to a low level.
In either case all Tauran minotaurs should be treated as NPCs, not monsters.
